Taping Techniques
There are 3 main taping techniques recognized here in North America: White Athletic Taping, McConnell Taping Technique, and Kinesio Taping Technique.
White Athletic Taping
White athletic taping technique is the most common in North America. It is extremely rigid and requires a pre wrap prior to application. It is normally left on for a short period of time and used for acute and preventative injuries. It is typically applied immediately prior to an activity and taken off immediately thereafter. This technique irritates the skin due to moisture entrapment, skin compression, muscle compression, joint compression and the high latex content. There are NO rehabilitative purposes or benefits gained from this tape.
McConnell Taping Technique
McConnell Taping is a bracing or strapping technique uses a super-rigid, cotton mesh highly adhesive tape (EnduraTape ®, LeukoTape®). It is most commonly used for knee, shoulder, lower back, foot and hip issues. The tape is left on for no more than 18 hours because of the in-adverse skin reaction. This tape is primarily used for neuromuscular re-education of the affected condition and left on for a shorter period of time due to its constricting and suffocating feel.
Kinesio Taping Technique
Kinesio Taping is a therapeutic taping technique which is applied over muscles not only offering you the support that you are looking for, but rehabilitating the affected area. Kinesio Taping reduces pain and inflammation, relaxes overused tired muscles, and supports muscles in movement on a 24hr/day basis.
The taping technique and highly specific tape allows the body and muscles to move fully while it assists in rehabilitation. There is no compression to the skin which makes it “light to the feel” allowing comfortable wear over a 3 to 5 day period. This latex free tape makes it hypoallergenic and safe to use. The water resistant fabric whisks away moisture and gives you the ability to bathe as normal.
Kinesio Taping works with the lymphatic system to increase circulation of blood and lymph in order to rehabilitate and relieve pain. Kinesio Taping is used virtually for all clinical conditions. This technique will not adversely affect you body mechanics. In contrast, traditional sports taping is wrapped around a joint strictly for stabilization and support during a sporting event.
Which Taping Technique to Choose
There are many therapy choices to address problems involving patients and athletes, taping that gives direct stabilization and support to the affected area. These taping techniques do a good job of temporarily reducing symptoms and pain, but in some cases the side effects may outweigh the advantages.
Some taping techniques reduce circulation causing muscles not to receive the much needed blood flow, negatively affecting the clinical condition. Other taping techniques restrict the natural range of motion, inhibiting overall performance and comfort. Kinesio Taping technique can eliminate these major side effects.
